The Florida State University fraternity and sorority community was teeming with excitement as they experienced the 2024 FSL Line-dance show, an outstanding dance competition hosted by the Panhellenic Association. This event, spearheaded by the men of Pi Kappa Alpha, Beta Theta Pi, Pi Lambda Phi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Theta Chi, aims to be a source of unity within Florida State University’s Greek community.
Carmen Hink, a co-captain of the Gamma Phi Beta x Beta Theta Pi team, provided insight into the motivation behind her teams' efforts. Hink, who has been a member of Gamma Phi Beta and the Line dance team since her freshman year, was inspired to assume the role of co-caption due to her passion for dancing and a desire to do more behind the scenes work with FSL line dance. Her path, filled with trials and victories, exemplifies the devotion and energy that distinguishes the spirit of FSL Line dance. Hink reflects on the season, highlighting the team's exceptional skill and devotion, particularly the freshmen who faced the difficulty of line dancing for the first time. Hink states, “To showcase everyone’s talents, can be difficult at times.” Despite, encountering difficulties, Hink refined her leadership abilities by overcoming challenges such as creating a successful dance routine, scheduling issues, and disparities in communication, ultimately achieving the delicate balance of time management and team development.
The Beta Theta Pi line dance delegate, Collin Quinsey, agrees with Hink regarding the transformative quality of the experience. Quinsey regarded stepping into his role as a way to enhance his participation within his chapter and the larger sorority and fraternity community. “I discovered the importance of networking, especially in regard to fundraising efforts.” Quinsey stated. Quinsey found himself gaining confidence and honing key skills such as networking and public speaking as he faced the challenges of arranging events and handling obligations.
Hink and Quinsey plan to apply what they've learned from leading an FSL Line dance team to other facets of their life. From improved communication to perfected leadership skills, the influence of this season extends well beyond the dance floor.
Hink believes that what distinguishes this season is the unmistakable drive for excellence and community development. Participants' recollections of rehearsals, talent showcases, and community interactions are everlasting, generating a sense of friendship and solidarity. As the curtains drop on FSL Line Dance 2024, it's apparent that this event is more than simply a competition—it's a celebration of unity, leadership, and the vibrant spirit of Florida State University's fraternity and sorority community.
We congratulate our very own Gamma Phi Sisters becoming "material girls" and dancing their hearts on stage.
